Bowled Over by our Picture Framing!

As well as being lucky enough to frame some extraordinary and beautiful photo’s, pictures and artworks for our personal customers, we also help realise framing solutions for some corporate and business clients also.

We recently completed a couple of business related projects that we thought you’d like to read about. One a complicated memorabilia challenge, the other, a mount cut and layout one.

Fire Hospitality (www.firehospitality.com) asked if we could frame and present some cricket memorabilia from a recent match they sponsored.

We really enjoyed this project and what was special to us was the attention to detail and construction of the presentation. It’s a large item with shadow boxes, different background colours, a heavy cricket bat, ball, stumps and bails. Our challenge was to present things with our usual conservation first approach in a robust, clean and professional manner.

To accommodate the cricket match memorabilia safely away from the glass, the “box” frame needed to be over 9cm deep. Fire hospitality selected our quality “Art Glass” with anti-reflective properties (reducing reflection/glare light by well over 90%). This choice also delivers UV protection (to help reduce colour fade over time) in sunlight of up to 70%.

We love the finished product and Fire Hospitality’s choice of the anti-reflective “Art Glass” to really show off the contents. We are sure they were bowled over with it and we hope Fire Hospitality get many years of enjoyment from the presentation.

Picture Frame of Finley's The Colour of Radiation (A game by Duckocide Games)

We will also mention a small independent computer game studio “Duckocide Games” (www.duckocide.games). Their new computer game utilised a retro comic book style and they wanted a framed picture to mark the release of their game “Finley’s - The Colour of Radiation”. What was interesting about this particular project was the mount and frame. They wanted to present a print of the main opening circular “splash” screen (the company logo) from the game, over a print of the comic book style main menu (from the game). Our computerised mount cutting capabilities allowed us to design and cut such a mount. Cut into a red mount card, we produced a circular mount aperture (logo image - bottom right of the frame) joined to a rectangular mount aperture (main presentation). The frame was a distressed metallic in keeping with the game. We think the circular cut-out over the main print and mount colour compliments the game well.

Seeing Things Clearly

We offer several different glass types for new and broken (re-glazing) jobs alike. Choosing the right glass for a picture frame is important. The properties and thickness of the glazing are aspects to consider.

Light reflection and (for some paints, pigments and colouring media) colour saturation fade (over time) can spoil the enjoyment of the picture. Here’s a shortlist of the different types of glass we generally offer for our framing solutions.

Picture Glass (Our Premium Standard)

For all picture framing where you are not concerned about light reflection, glare or elevated UV protection.

Diffused Picture Glass (Etched Surface)

For all picture frame where you are concerned about light reflection. This glass uses an etched surface (that can’t be easily seen when close to the artwork) to scatter reflections and glare.

“Art Glass” with Anti-Reflection Coating*

A modern glass that significantly reduces light reflection and glare. Ideal for any picture framing project where you want to present the piece on display at it’s very best, minimising distraction from light reflection and glare (no more than 1% of light reflected). Unlike diffused picture glass, this type has a smooth flat glass surface. The special anti-reflective coating also offering 70% UV protection

“Art Glass” with UV Protective Coating*

Any picture framing where you are not concerned about light reflection but do want to protect the artwork from harmful UV sunlight (99% protection).

“Art Glass” with UV Protective and Anti-Reflection Coating*

Our top range modern glass that significantly reduces light reflection as well as providing excellent harmful UV sunlight protection (99% protection). Ideal for anyone looking for a “Museum Standard” presentation of their artwork. Unlike diffused picture glass, this type also has a smooth flat glass surface. The special anti-reflective coating is coupled with a UV protective coating offering 99% UV protection.

Whilst glass is generally accepted as the best presentation choice for clarity, we do also offer various types of acrylic glazing - Often a necessity where safety or reduction in overall weight are considered important. These also offer excellent clarity and can implement many of the anti-reflective and UV protective properties we have discussed here.

We hope you will come see us with your picture framing projects soon. Just a reminder that if you are looking to get a picture framed for Christmas, do try and place your project with us before 3rd December.
